PHOENIX-OoC Research Presented at the GS2025 Sensors Workshop in Bologna

From 15 to 17 December 2025, Giorgia Leotta (UNITOV) participated in the GS2025 Interdivisional Sensors Group Workshop, held in Bologna, Italy.

Organised by the Italian Chemical Society and the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics, the workshop brought together more than 100 chemists, physicists, engineers, clinicians, technology developers and industry representatives working in the field of sensors and biosensors.

The three-day programme included oral presentations, an extensive poster session and networking activities focused on the latest developments in sensing technologies for healthcare, food safety, environmental monitoring, forensic applications and security. Particular attention was given to electrochemical, optical, gravimetric and optoelectronic sensors, wearable and integrated systems, clinical diagnostics and point-of-care technologies.

Giorgia presented a poster entitled “Paper-based oxygen electrode integrated into a multi-sensor array for Organ-on-a-Chip applications”.

The work, carried out within the PHOENIX-OoC project, introduced a novel paper-based electrochemical sensor designed for continuous monitoring of dissolved oxygen in Organ-on-Chip platforms. The sensor was fabricated using a wax-patterned paper substrate combined with screen-printed Ag/AgCl and graphite electrodes.

The poster session provided an opportunity to discuss the integration of sustainable, low-cost electrochemical sensors into Organ-on-Chip systems with researchers from academia and industry. The discussions reflected the growing interest in sensing technologies capable of providing continuous, real-time monitoring of physiological parameters and supporting the development of more advanced and physiologically relevant Organ-on-Chip models.
