Phoenix-OoC at the 35th Anniversary World Congress on Biosensors

Luca Fiore from Sense4Med (Italy) represented the Phoenix-OoC project at the 35th Biosensors Congress, held in Lisbon from May 19–22, 2025. As one of the largest and most prestigious global events in the biosensor field, the conference featured plenary lectures, high-quality oral sessions, and extensive poster presentations covering topics such as bioelectronics, wearable biosensors, microfluidics, AI integration, and sustainable sensor technologies.

Luca Fiore presented a poster titled: “Paper-based electrochemical (bio)sensors for a disruptive origami Organ-on-Chip device: Phoenix-OoC.”

The presentation highlighted the development of paper-based electrochemical sensors for pH, nitrate, and glucose detection – key elements of the Phoenix-OoC platform. These sensors, screen-printed onto filter paper with wax-defined microfluidic zones, were engineered for high sensitivity using nanomaterials, ion-selective membranes, and enzyme immobilization strategies. Calibration was performed using both potentiometric and chronoamperometric techniques, yielding strong correlation coefficients (R² > 0.96) and excellent reproducibility.

Phoenix-OoC represents a novel, sustainable approach to organ-on-chip design, offering cost-effective, biodegradable, and scalable tools for biomedical research and toxicological studies.
