Keynote Lecture at the NanoBalkan International Conference (NB2025), Tirana
From September 29 to October 2, 2025, the NanoBalkan International Conference (NB2025) was held in Tirana, Albania, bringing together leading scientists, professionals, and young researchers in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The event focused strongly on biomedical applications, including diagnostics, biosensing, and personalized healthcare, and served as an inspiring platform for scientific exchange and collaboration.
Among the distinguished invited speakers, Prof. Fabiana Arduini, coordinator of the EU-funded PHOENIX project and Professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (UNITOV), delivered a Keynote Lecture entitled “Paper-based electrochemical (bio)sensors: where we are and where we are going”.
In her presentation, Prof. Arduini provided a comprehensive overview of the progress achieved by her research group in developing electrochemical paper-based (bio)sensors, emphasizing their evolution from simple analytical devices to integrated systems for point-of-care diagnostics. She highlighted how the porosity, flexibility, and biodegradability of paper can be harnessed to design low-cost, disposable biosensors for rapid and reliable detection of biomarkers in complex biological samples.
Case studies presented during the lecture illustrated the potential of these devices in disease management, therapeutic monitoring, and healthcare screening, showcasing how sustainable analytical chemistry can drive innovation in biomedical diagnostics.
During the conference, Prof. Arduini also met with Prof. Arben Merkoci (Conference Chair and member of the Advisory Board of PHOENIX-OoC) and Prof. Javier Ramón (PHOENIX-OoC partner) to discuss the latest project progress and collaborative opportunities.
