PHOENIX-OoC at the TERMIS-EU 2026 Congress

Luciano Riso from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), Barcelona, Spain, and Cosimo Loffreda from the University of Basel participated in the TERMIS-EU 2026 Congress, held from 21 to 24 April 2026 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

The European Chapter Meeting of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society brought together 1,616 researchers, clinicians and industry representatives from more than 50 countries. The congress provided an important international platform for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The programme covered a wide range of topics, including biofabrication and 3D bioprinting, advanced biomaterials and smart polymers, cell and gene therapies, organoids and organ-on-chip systems, nanomaterials, drug-delivery platforms, biological interfaces, clinical applications, regulatory affairs, commercialisation and personalised medicine.

During the congress, Luciano Riso presented the poster “Hydrogel cryostructuring to pattern pore orientation in cartilage-mimetic scaffolds”, showcasing ongoing research into scaffold-based strategies for functional cartilage tissue mimicking.

The research addresses one of the key challenges in cartilage tissue engineering: reproducing the complex zonal structure of native cartilage, including gradients in cell organisation, collagen-fibre alignment and mechanical properties. To overcome the limited control offered by conventional hydrogels, the proposed biomimetic approach uses tunable cryogels to achieve greater control over internal pore orientation and scaffold architecture.

The participation of Luciano Riso and Cosimo Loffreda provided a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge with the international research community, discuss recent advances in regenerative medicine and explore possibilities for future collaboration.
